Out with the Old and in with the New
by Jo Della Penna

Recently, my family moved homes. We moved only 2 miles away in the same city so a lot of our daily lives remained unchanged. However, what I found is that there was a part of me that struggled to move forward, to move ahead.
You see, my husband owned the home prior to us marrying. I moved in when we married. It was our first home together. Each of our three children was born there, one who is now 10 years old, J.J. and the twins, Jazlyn and Jason, are now 6 years old. So, needless to say, there is a lot of history stored up from the past 13 years living in that small, yet quaint home.
What I also realized is that the house not only represented some wonderful and exciting changes; it also held some painful, trying times my family struggled through over the past 13 years. In retrospect, I understand that all the struggles, pain and tears shed were part of the process to bring me where I am today.

As I was confiding recently to a dear friend, I realized that the house was in many respects a form of a cocoon. Who I am, who my husband is and who we are as a family is far from who we were when we stepped into that home in May 1996 as a newly married couple. We transformation from the "caterpillars" we were to the "butterflies" we are today; refined and strong.

In order to step into the new - what 2009 and beyond holds - I must let go of the old. It was so much easier said than done, for sure! Even though I have been making great stride with all the new stuff, it has been a bit challenging - like walking with a weight around the ankles. However, with the support and encourage from my close friends, coaching partners and my mastermind friends, I went back to that home and officially said "Good-Bye". What a relief and a peace that has come over me ever since. I feel ready and prepared for what 2009 will bring!

What do you need to let go? What "old" do you need to say good-bye to so you can step boldly into your "yes"?

There were three powerful realizations, or I should say, reminders that came from that experience:

1)   It is not the fear of the actual action that we fear most, but the feelings that we will feel as we walk forward. I learned that a while a go from one of my coaches.

  • I was reminded recently of a quote I once heard, "What we fear most is the very thing we must do." Not sure who said it, but it is so true! The anticipation was far worse than actually taking the action to do it.

2)   In order to move forward and evolve as individuals and in our business, it is important to let go of the "old" to allow room for the "new".

  • As many of you know, I began my business as a bookkeeping company. And even though I primarily do coaching, speaking, writing and even changed my brand to The Business of You, I still had 3 clients from the "old" business...one of the weights around the ankles, remember? In the past few months, I have made plans to completely transition out to allow more room for the newness (and new revenue) that waits ahead.

3)   It takes courage to follow your authentic passion and make decisions based on where you are headed and not from where you are.

  • Faith is a muscle I have had to learn to exercise often and develop over the past several years. When I take steps to move forward, sometimes all I can see is 20 feet in front of me, if that! However, as I continue to say "yes" to the new and what I know is right for me - my higher calling, what seem to be miracles begin to happen!

Remember...we are all Divinely supported, whether we acknowledge it or not. As we begin to move into the New Year, start saying "Good-Bye" to the old and start saying "Yes" to the new! You will be amazed where the journey will take you!
